Biography |
Clarinetist Andrew Sprung has performed in Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, and in numerous venues in Europe. He has performed extensively in the Midwest with ensembles such as the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Concert Band, Lima (OH) Symphony Orchestra, Perrysburg (OH) Symphony Orchestra, Central Iowa Symphony, Ames (IA) Chamber Artists, Ames Dixieland Band, The Java Jews (Klezmer band of Ames, IA), and numerous municipal bands in Iowa. As a soloist, Sprung has performed concertos with the Bowling Green State University Wind Symphony and with the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra as a winner of its Concerto Competition in 2007.
An active performer of new music, Sprung was a guest performer at the 2008 Heidelberg College (Tiffin, OH) New Music Festival. He has also participated in world premieres and North American premieres of compositions ranging from solos to orchestral works. In 2008, Sprung commissioned a solo for bass clarinet and electroacoustics by composer Andrew Martin Smith and gave the world premiere performance in January 2009.
Sprung is also active as an educator and scholar. In addition to giving master classes in public schools and maintaining a private clarinet studio, he has held numerous teaching positions. Currently, Sprung teaches clarinet sectionals to junior high and high school students in the Holt, Michigan Public Schools. He previously held appointments as instrumental music instructor for Anthony Wayne Local Schools in Whitehouse, Ohio and as instructor of clarinet and saxophone methods at Bowling Green State University. Sprung’s article, “Himie Voxman: The Man Behind the Methods,” was published in the December 2008 issue of The Clarinet, the official journal of the International Clarinet Association.
Sprung is a member of professional associations such as the International Clarinet Association and Music Teachers National Association and honor societies including Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and The Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Sprung holds a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Iowa State University. He is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance at Michigan State University, where he studies clarinet with Caroline Hartig. His previous teachers include Kevin Schempf, Joseph Messenger, and Harvey Von Wald. |
